MCU Wiki:Naming policy

From Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki's naming policy is a guideline used to determine the way for naming the different articles inside the wiki. Because of the wide universe we care about, it could be very confusing to name an article when the universe is increasing.

General conventions

  • Due to the Mediawiki software configuration, the first article letter IS a capital letter by default. Yet, if you put a wikilink inside an article, you can type a small letter as first character, the software will automaticaly capitalize it when you click on the link.
  • The first letter of each word should not be capitalized unless specification (movie, series and episode titles, characters and persons names, organizations, media titles, etc).

Articles

Crew/Actors

  • The common article naming is "First name Middle initial (if present) Last Name Particle (if present)" as written in the credits sequences.
  • If two people share the exact same name, their main occupation should be added inside parenthesis after the full name (e.g. Person's full name (occupation)) and a disambiguation page should be created.
  • If a female person has a change in her name (e.g. a marriage, a divorce, etc.), her last known full name should be used as article name, with a redirect from the previous name to the right article. The previous name should appear in the "other name" field inside the infobox.

Films

  • The film article is part of the "Film" namespace and should start with "Film:". Example: Film:The Incredible Hulk
  • In general, each word in English titles of films take initial capital, except for articles ("a", "an", "the"), the word "to" as part of an infinitive, and prepositions and coordinating conjunctions shorter than five letters (e.g., "on", "from", "and", "with"), unless they begin or end a title or subtitle. Examples: The Incredible Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, etc.

Episodes

  • The episode article is part of the "Episode" namespace and should start with "Episode:". Example: Episode:The Real Deal
  • In general, each word in English titles of episodes take initial capital, except for articles ("a", "an", "the"), the word "to" as part of an infinitive, and prepositions and coordinating conjunctions shorter than five letters (e.g., "on", "from", "and", "with"), unless they begin or end a title or subtitle. Examples: "Deal with Our Devils, "...And Finally, Black Bolt", "The Dark at the End of the Tunnel", etc.
  • If any episode from different series share the exact same title (like "Rewind" in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel's Runaways), they should have the series names (without "Marvel's") inside parenthesis after the episode title (e.g. Episode:Rewind (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Episode:Rewind (Runaways)). This should happen rarely (may be the different series pilots).

TV series

  • In general, each word in English titles of series take initial capital, except for articles ("a", "an", "the"), the word "to" as part of an infinitive, and prepositions and coordinating conjunctions shorter than five letters (e.g., "on", "from", "and", "with"), unless they begin or end a title or subtitle.
  • Mostly, each TV series should starts with "Marvel's" (as said in the "previously on" sections in differents ABC episodes).
